Religion does not teach terrorism: vice president

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Vice President Ma’ruf Amin underscored that no single religion in Indonesia teaches its adherents to take extreme course of action and spread terror.

“I also want to reiterate that there is no single religion that teaches its adherents to commit extremism and terrorism. All religious teachings reject terrorism, whatever the reason,” Vice President Amin stated at the Shangri-la Hotel Jakarta, Wednesday.

According to Islam, the Vice President highlighted that extremism and terrorism in the name of religion ran counter to the faith and were destructive in nature.

“Terrorism is not a jihad to fix any problem, as the basic essence of terrorism is destructive,” the vice president noted.

In the preamble to the 1945 Constitution, Amin remarked that the state was formed to protect the Indonesian nation and the entire homeland of Indonesia.

Hence, the government has prepared a mandate, made a commitment, and has a strong legal basis to prevent and take action in the context of eradicating criminal acts of terrorism, he explained.

“At the end of March, President (Joko Widodo) also emphasized that terrorism is a crime against humanity and has nothing to do with any religion,” Amin stated.

Vice President Amin attended the launch of the implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 7 of 2021 on the 2020-2024 National Action Plan for Preventing and Combating Violent Extremism Based on Terrorism (RAN PE) at the Shangri-la Hotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The event was organized by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), with the attendees comprising Coordinating Minister for Political, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD and Head of BNPT Commissioner General of Police Boy Rafli Amar.

Amar noted that the presidential regulation provides room for all societal elements to become involved in preventing violent extremism that leads to terrorism.

“The triggering factors for violent extremism, which lead to terrorism, are never single and not all spaces in society can be entered by state actors, so this Presidential Regulation facilitates it,” he explained.
