Chiang mai: Rental car thefts in Chiang Mai continue to increase. In just five months, no fewer than 30 vehicles have been stolen. Some have been stolen for ransom, while others have been sent across the border to be sold in neighboring countries. Gangs of criminals have developed a strategy for both rentals and fraud. Furthermore, criminal gangs have repeatedly used stolen vehicle information to defraud owners of their vehicles and extort ransoms.
According to Thai News Agency, these criminal gangs have become increasingly sophisticated, employing tactics that involve both digital manipulation and physical theft. The syndicates often target rental car agencies, exploiting the system to gain access to vehicles without raising immediate suspicion. Once in possession of the cars, they either demand ransom from the rental companies or swiftly move the vehicles across borders to sell them in neighboring countries.
Authorities are reportedly struggling to keep up with the pace of these thefts, largely due to the cross-border nature of the crimes. The stolen vehicles are often disguised or their identification numbers altered, making recovery efforts challenging. Meanwhile, the rental agencies are calling for enhanced security measures and better collaboration with law enforcement to curb these incidents.
Local police in Chiang Mai are urging rental companies to implement stricter verification processes for customers and to install advanced tracking systems in their vehicles to deter potential thieves. The ongoing investigation aims to dismantle these organized crime rings and prevent further losses.
