Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has reiterated its position on the detention of 18 Cambodian soldiers, asserting that the action aligns with international law.
According to Thai News Agency, the Army spokesman, Major General Winthai Suvari, addressed Cambodia’s request for the repatriation of the detained soldiers. He emphasized that Thailand’s actions are consistent with international humanitarian principles and suggested that Cambodia may not fully understand these international practices. Major General Suvari expressed confidence that allied countries and international organizations recognize Thailand’s compliance with international law, contrary to Cambodia’s concerns.
He further explained that Thailand has been cooperative with international organizations from the outset of the detention, allowing them to coordinate visits. An example cited was the visit by a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on August 5th, which included protection officers, medical experts, project officers, and interpreters. Major General Suvari stressed that the detention of the soldiers is protected under international law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, and refuted claims by Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense that the detention was illegal.
The continued detention is deemed necessary until a clear ceasefire or combat situation is established, ensuring that the detained soldiers do not return to combat against Thailand, in line with international principles. The Thai Army also highlighted Cambodia’s acknowledgment of the need to focus on other significant matters, reflecting its commitment to the ceasefire agreement.
