Royal Thai Navy Asserts Readiness to Safeguard Koh Kood.


Bangkok: Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, Admiral Chirapol Wongwit, has affirmed the navy’s preparedness to protect Koh Kood, a critical area of national interest. During a recent visit to the Koh Kood Operations Unit in Khlong Yai District, Trat Province, Admiral Wongwit assured that the Royal Thai Navy is fully equipped to safeguard the sovereign territory and maintain peace in the region.

According to Thai News Agency, the Admiral emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with neighboring countries amidst overlapping territorial claims, ensuring no conflicts arise. The visit was part of an initiative to inspect the readiness of navy personnel and equipment, aiming to boost morale and operational efficiency. Admiral Wongwit expressed gratitude to the personnel for their dedication, acknowledging the sacrifices made by those stationed in remote areas to protect national interests.

During his inspection, Admiral Wongwit highlighted the importance of having adequate support syst
ems, such as electricity and water, which are crucial for the functioning of the naval units. He pointed out that while personnel and equipment are ready, technological and infrastructural improvements are ongoing. The Koh Kood Operations Unit and the Marine Corps are actively working together to manage and monitor the sea area, sending vital information to the central Royal Thai Navy command in Bangkok.

The Koh Kood Operations Unit, initially established in 1978 and renamed in 1986, operates under the tactical control of the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Commands. The unit is a special task force of the Air Defense and Coastal Defense Command, continuously responsible for organizing forces and ensuring the security of the area.

Addressing concerns regarding the Thai government’s maritime policies, Admiral Wongwit reiterated the navy’s commitment to protecting national sovereignty and maritime interests as defined by the government. He stressed that while policy negotiations are the responsibility of
the government, the navy’s role is to ensure the declared boundaries are respected and protected.

In response to questions about potential symbolic moves by groups making demands, Admiral Wongwit reassured the public of the navy’s capability to manage the area effectively. He stated that the community’s confidence in the navy remains strong, with local villagers and fishermen continuing their livelihoods in peace.

The Admiral also addressed political concerns linked to the Koh Kood area, affirming that the navy maintains good relations with neighboring countries. Honest fishing operations have not been disrupted, with only smuggling activities being intercepted. The overall atmosphere in the region is one of harmony, with no significant signs of conflict, underscoring the navy’s dedication to maintaining regional stability.
