Scientific data utilization can bolster agriculture productivity: BRIN

The use of scientific data in the agriculture sector continues to be pushed to boost the sector’s productivity, National Research and Innovation Agency’s (BRIN’s) Electronics and Informatics Research Organization Head, Budi Prawara, stated.

“Digitalization in agriculture that involves the utilization of information technologies, such as big data, artificial intelligence, internet of things, and machine learning, is expected to be able to bolster productivity and efficiency,” he noted.

Scientific data in agriculture will play a major role in the efforts to bolster productivity amid the land and water limitation issue, he stated at the virtual discussion — Utilizing Scientific Data in Agriculture — on Thursday.

Moreover, Indonesia’s population that continues to significantly rise is another pressing reason to bolster productivity.

Analytics data, which is part of scientific data, can be utilized by agriculture stakeholders to obtain the required information to optimize their efforts.

Several researches conducted by BRIN in the field of information technology to support agriculture include research in types and varieties classification, agriculture product quality evaluation, and disease detection in plants, Prawara stated.

“Researchers in this scientific data field implement the capabilities that exist in their respective expertise in agriculture in the form of artificial intelligence-based application or software,” he remarked.

Several products developed by BRIN along with its partners are expected to be utilized by stakeholders in the field of agriculture.

Earlier, BRIN’s Research and Innovation Funding Acting Director Ajeng Arum Sari, through a statement on Wednesday, stated that the agency facilitates agriculture research for all parties to create innovation and technologies.

These innovations and technologies are used to improve competitiveness and productivity of Indonesian agriculture.

The research for the creation of key technology should be scientifically proven. After it is proven scientifically, the research can move on to the testing phase, she noted.
