Bangkok: The Senate’s Religious Affairs Committee convened to address allegations involving Phra V. Vajiramedhi in connection with the Icon Group and Rai Chern Tawan cases. No definitive conclusions were reached during the meeting, but the committee emphasized its commitment to thoroughly investigate and take necessary actions against those implicated.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Amon Srikongpan, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Religion, Morality, Ethics, Arts and Culture, stated that the meeting focused on public criticism surrounding Phra V. Vajiramedhi’s involvement with the Rai Chern Tawan area in Chiang Rai Province and The Icon Group Company. The committee is treating the matter with significant concern due to its societal sensitivity, inviting experts for extensive discussions. Despite the broad agenda, no resolutions were finalized in the session.
Mr. Sippawon Kaewngam, former director of the National Office of Buddhism and advisor to the committee, noted that the issue deeply affects B
uddhists and many Thai citizens. He indicated that both religious and governmental bodies are examining the incident in line with Dhamma-Vinaya principles and legal frameworks. The committee is in the process of gathering comprehensive data to eventually present findings to the public.
Senator Varawut Tiranand, Chairman of the Sub-Committee, outlined three key areas under scrutiny: Dhamma-Vinaya matters being reviewed by the Sangha, legal proceedings initiated by officials, and the broader implications for Buddhism. He stressed the importance of handling the situation delicately, given Phra V. Vajiramedhi’s status as a senior monk. The sub-committee plans to convene again once more information is available, with intentions to disclose findings publicly.
