Senator Upakit Cautioned Amid Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Bangkok: Rangsiman Rome, MP for the party list and deputy leader of the Prachachon Party, has issued a cautionary statement to former senator Upakit Pajariyangkun, urging him to refrain from overconfidence regarding the recent dismissal of charges against him until the legal proceedings are fully concluded. Rome emphasized the broader implications of such cases on drug suppression efforts in the country.

According to Thai News Agency, the Criminal Court recently voted to dismiss all charges against Mr. Upakit, a decision that has sparked widespread debate. Rome highlighted that the case involving Mr. Upakit should be seen in connection with the case of Mr. Min Lat and his associates, suggesting that both cases are interlinked. He noted the Attorney General’s decision to appeal the dismissal in Mr. Min Lat’s case and expressed hope that a similar approach would be considered for Mr. Upakit’s case. Rome warned that if current standards for handling drug-related cases persist, it could severely undermine the country’s ability to combat drug trafficking networks, which often operate as sophisticated transnational organizations.

Rome further elaborated on the challenges of apprehending high-level drug traffickers, noting the systematic nature of their operations. He stressed the necessity for stronger legal frameworks and judicial processes to effectively target the masterminds behind drug crimes, rather than just their operatives. He reiterated his respect for the court’s decision but emphasized that the Supreme Court’s final judgment would be crucial in setting future guidelines for drug-related cases.

In response to inquiries about potential legal repercussions from Upakit, who is reportedly considering a countersuit, Rome remained unfazed. He mentioned that Upakit had previously filed three defamation suits against him, two of which had already been dismissed. Rome maintained that his statements were based on factual information from authorized case files, asserting his commitment to protecting national interests and expressing no personal animosity toward Upakit.

Rome also commented on the systemic issues related to drug money laundering, particularly through informal channels like money transfer tables, which he claimed are being exploited under the guise of legality. He called for a thorough review of standards in the justice system to prevent such practices, warning of significant national challenges if these issues remain unaddressed.

Finally, when questioned about Upakit’s restoration of his title and reputation, Rome humorously suggested waiting for the case’s conclusion before drawing any conclusions. He advised caution to those in authority about establishing precedents that could be misused by other criminals, underscoring the need for careful consideration in the pursuit of justice.
