Social Affairs Ministry distributes family tents to earthquake victims

The Ministry of Social Affairs distributed family tents to earthquake victims in Pasaman and West Pasaman, West Sumatra, under the efforts to apply a familial approach in the handling of disaster victims.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini noted that these tents were intended for families whose homes were destroyed by the earthquake.

“The families will put up the tents. It is up to the family heads to decide where to set up the tents,” Rismaharini noted while surveying the impact of the earthquake in West Pasaman on February 25, 2022.

During the visit to West Pasaman, the minister invited the residents to put up the family tents together. The tents were 4×4 m in size and were designed to hold four to five people.

In Jorong Siparayo, Nagari Malampah, Tigo Nagari, Pasaman, the residents collectively set up family tents in proximity to their houses.

“I have never put up a tent like this. This is my first time. However, I am happy that each family gets one,” Jaenuddin, a resident whose home was destroyed by the earthquake, remarked.

The Ministry’s Natural Disaster Victim Social Protection Acting Director, Iyan Kusmadiana, noted that residents can put up a family tent in front of their houses.

“Residents do not have to evacuate far from their home. It will make it easier for them to monitor the condition and to communicate with the nearby residents,” he explained.

“Although they are evacuating, they can still feel comfortable,” he stated.

The family tents provided by the ministry are offered along with a roll-up mattress, blanket, and tent light.

Until now, 364 family tents have been set up in front of or around the resident’s houses in Nagari Kajai, Talamau, West Pasaman.

Moreover, 15 family tents have been set up in Nagari Malampah and 30 family tents are being set up at the courtyard of the Tigo Nagari Sub-District Office in Pasaman.
