Storm ‘Chami’ Threatens Northern Thailand with Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Bangkok: Northern Thailand is bracing for increased rainfall and strong winds as storm “Chami” approaches the region, according to the Meteorological Department. The storm’s trajectory is expected to bring significant weather changes to various parts of the country, with the potential for flash floods and hazardous conditions.

According to Thai News Agency, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings about more rain and gusty winds in the upper regions of Thailand, particularly in the lower North, Central regions, and Bangkok. Some areas in the Northeast and East are anticipated to experience very heavy rainfall. As the storm progresses, cooler morning temperatures are expected in the upper North and Northeast. Residents are advised to prepare for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and potential flash floods, especially in hillside regions near waterways and low-lying areas.

The adverse weather conditions are attributed to the influence of northwesterly and northeasterly winds across the northeastern, eastern
, and northern parts of the central regions, combined with the strong tropical storm “Chami” centered in the central South China Sea. The storm is projected to move closer to Vietnam’s central coast on October 27-28, 2024.

In addition, the westerly and northwesterly winds affecting the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to cause heavy rain along the southern western coast. The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are experiencing moderate wave activity, with the lower Andaman Sea seeing waves around 2 meters high and the upper Andaman Sea and Gulf reaching 1-2 meters. Areas with thunderstorms may see even higher waves, prompting warnings for sailors to exercise caution and avoid storm-affected zones.
