Students must return after finishing education overseas: governor

Governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan has urged students who have finished their education overseas to return to the country to help the government resolve various issues.

“I often say to anyone studying in various countries when they return to bring their knowledge to resolve problems in Indonesia,” he said at Bahari Museum here on Friday.

Bringing knowledge to resolve problems in Indonesia is different from bringing knowledge to practice it in Indonesia, he emphasized.

This is because practicing it would mean studying knowledge in A and implementing it in B, he opined.

All problems that cities encounter in the world differ from one another, he noted.

Hence, he urged students studying overseas to bring their knowledge to Indonesia and utilize it based on the context of the problems in Indonesia.

The Dutch Training and Exposure Programme (DUTEP), a student exchange program for Jakarta government staff in the Netherlands, has produced many graduates who have proceeded to work in the Jakarta provincial government, he said.

According to Baswedan, through the program that has been held since 2014, the Jakarta provincial government has been able to observe best practices, which have then been used to resolve problems in Jakarta.

On a separate occasion, the governor also highlighted that there are still many things that need to be done to transform Jakarta into a global city. However, he did not specify what must be done.

One of the factors that puts Jakarta on equal footing with other global cities is the fact that it is the biggest metropolis in the southern side of the world, he said.
