Sukhothai Residents Reassured Amidst False Dam Overflow Rumors

BANGKOK: The National Peacekeeping Council has assured residents of Sukhothai that rumors regarding the overflow of Mae Mok Dam are unfounded, amid widespread concerns about potential flooding. Officials emphasized that water management remains under control, despite ongoing weather disturbances.

According to Thai News Agency, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) confirmed that there is no cause for alarm in Sukhothai, as the rumors about Mae Mok Dam overflowing are false. Although storm “Chami” is expected to make landfall in Vietnam this week, potentially causing heavy rains in northeastern Thailand, officials advise residents to stay informed through official warnings.

Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, an advisor to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operation Center (FSOC), reported an increase in water flow upstream of the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat Province. The water level has risen by approximately 80 centimeters, necessitating an i
ncrease in downstream discharge from 1,300 to 1,400 cubic meters per second. This adjustment might lead to a rise in water levels by 20-30 centimeters in low-lying areas of Ang Thong and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provinces.

Mr. Jirayu further clarified that despite rumors, the Mae Mok Dam’s water levels remain manageable, and there is no anticipated impact on Sukhothai’s economic areas. Meanwhile, the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued warnings for 18 provinces, urging vigilance against flash floods and overflowing riverbanks, particularly in flood-prone urban communities. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has deployed 1,567 disaster relief machinery units to be on standby.

The Meteorological Department is closely monitoring the development of tropical storm “Chami,” which is predicted to affect northeastern Thailand, including Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, and Si Sa Ket, with heavy rains and strong winds. Residents in these areas are advised to ensure the st
ructural stability of their buildings.
