Telkomsel expands VoLTE services to strengthen 5G ecosystem

State-owned mobile operator Telkomsel continues to expand the 4G-based Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) services in Indonesia to bolster the 5G ecosystem.

“Telkomsel continues to strengthen the digital connectivity pillars, which is a key in the development and utilization of digital platforms and services for Indonesian people,” Telkomsel Network Director Nugroho noted in a press release, as quoted here on Friday.

According to Nugroho, the VoLTE network technology will empower an inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem.

“It will also open more opportunities for people while conducting their daily activities and increase their productivity through the use of the latest technology,” he explained.

The coverage expansion of the VoLTE network is Telkomsel’s efforts to expedite the transition of 2G and 3G networks to 4G or LTE, he pointed out.

He affirmed that VoLTE services promise smoother, faster, and clearer phone calls than conventional calls or Voice over IP (VoIP) calls.

VoLTE also allows users to have high-definition voice calls while accessing the internet at the same time, Nugroho explained.

“Next, the Video Ring Back Tone (RBT) service can be implemented when customers make voice or video phone calls on VoLTE networks,” he remarked.

Telkomsel’s VoLTE service currently covers 219 districts and cities. Telkomsel, as the Telkom Group’s sub-holding, has targeted 230 districts and cities to be covered by 2021-end.

Nugroho affirmed that the acceleration of VoLTE services’ expansion increased by about 350 percent since the start of the year. Users of the service have also increased by about 80.9 percent since the start of 2021.

He noted that the expansion was directly proportional to the collaboration with smartphone device partners that support VoLTE.

Telkomsel’s VoLTE service can currently be used on more than 100 types of mobile phones, including Advan, Evercross, Huawei, Oppo, Realme, Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi brands, he stated.

VoLTE is also Telkomsel’s commitment to building a scalable 5G ecosystem. Nugroho informed that Telkomsel is the first mobile operator in Indonesia to offer commercial 5G services.

Telkomsel sees a wide range of potential from the VoLTE capabilities, which are interactive calling and interoperable communication, he remarked.

Thus, much higher quality voice services will be offered while using 5G networks, he added.
