Thai Defense Minister Urges Patience on Military Land Reassessment

Bangkok: Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai emphasized the need for a comprehensive study before deciding on the potential repurposing of the Thupatemi golf course, a military-owned land, highlighting its significance in national security.

According to Thai News Agency, the minister addressed the issue in response to a query during a House of Representatives meeting led by Speaker Wan Muhammad Noor Matha. The focus of the meeting was on various regional issues, including persistent flooding, drought, and insufficient tap water supply in provinces such as Rayong, Lampang, and Sakon Nakhon. Phumtham pointed out that the Thupatemi golf course is not just any piece of land but holds particular importance for VVIP and VIP security, which complicates any potential plans for its conversion.

During the session, the minister also responded to concerns raised by Pathum Thani MP Chetawan Tueprakon of the Prachachon Party regarding the underutilization of military lands. Phumtham noted that a special committee is cu
rrently assessing whether parts of the military’s holdings could be managed by other agencies or relocated. This committee, which includes three generals, is tasked with ensuring that any proposed changes will not affect national security, including the operations concerning commercial aircraft.

Phumtham urged patience and a balanced perspective on the matter, emphasizing the importance of thorough scrutiny by the special committee. ‘If the committee’s findings are conclusive and demonstrate no significant impact, adjustments might be considered,’ he stated. However, he stressed the importance of a careful approach given the strategic nature of the land, underscoring that any decision must consider the potential life-and-death implications.

The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to addressing both local and national issues through reasoned dialogue among all parties involved, ensuring that every decision is backed by solid evidence and consideration for public safety and national interest.
