Thai Government Pursues Diplomatic Efforts for Return of Royal Elephants from Sri Lanka

Bangkok: The government is proceeding with negotiations to bring the royal elephant back to Thailand with honor. The government is moving forward with discussions through diplomatic channels to bring the royal elephant back to Thailand in a proper and dignified manner.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwattana, Deputy Government Spokesperson, revealed that the government, led by Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, is aware of the public’s concerns regarding the two royally bestowed elephants in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and is committed to ensuring their prudent and appropriate repatriation.

The Deputy Government Spokesperson stated that as the two royal elephants are “government-to-government” gifts, the process must be conducted under diplomatic procedures that honor and take into account the long-standing good relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka. The government has therefore assigned the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo to coordinate with relevant Sri Lankan government agencies to negotiate and find an appropriate joint solution.

The Thai government is currently working diligently and continuously to ensure the safe and dignified return of the two royal elephants to Thailand. However, this diplomatic process requires time, meticulousness, and patience from all parties to achieve common goals within the framework of good international relations.

The government would like to thank all members of the public who love and care for Thai elephants and have closely followed this issue. The public’s support has been a crucial driving force in pushing the government to proceed with serious action and without neglect at every step, ensuring the dignified return of the two royally bestowed elephants through the most appropriate diplomatic process.
