Thailand Overcomes Border and US Tariff Crises: Prime Minister’s Secretary-General Speaks

Bangkok: The Prime Minister’s Secretary-General has expressed confidence that Thailand has successfully navigated two significant challenges: resolving tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border and addressing US tariff issues.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of the General Border Committee (GBC) as the starting point for resolving these problems. He noted that the recent US tariff negotiations have not disadvantaged Thailand compared to its competitors, thanks to effective government communications and strategic measures.

Dr. Prommin highlighted Thailand’s progress in negotiating a 19% tariff on US goods, following a special Cabinet meeting on August 1st. He stated that Thailand has successfully managed two initial crises, including the conflict at the Thai-Cambodian border. A ceasefire and dialogue have facilitated a return to peace, despite lingering suspicion and distrust. The GBC meeting is expected to further dialogue and resolve issues through negotiation.

The resolution of the US tariff negotiation crisis marks a significant milestone for Thailand’s economic sector. While the crisis has passed, Dr. Prommin noted that the government’s work is not yet complete. The successful negotiation allows Thailand to resume trade and expand markets, with exports remaining competitive. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira identified this resolution as a turning point for the nation, emphasizing the need for unity to overcome challenges and progress towards a better future.

Dr. Prommin also addressed concerns about government communication strategies, acknowledging past duplications and inaccuracies. He highlighted the role of the Special Operations Center for the Management of the Situation on the Thai-Cambodian Border (SOC) in coordinating efforts among government agencies. General Nattapol Nakphanit, Deputy Minister of Defense, leads the SOC, ensuring collaboration with the Army and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Regarding US taxes, Dr. Prommin confirmed that, following the special Cabinet meeting, negotiations will continue under the legal framework. The matter will be brought before the House of Representatives and proceed in accordance with the law.
