Thammanat Emphasizes Uncertainty in Political Alliances Amid Deputy Speaker Discussions

Bangkok: Lt. Col. Thammanat Prompao, a Member of Parliament for Phayao and advisor to the Kla Tham Party, has highlighted the fluid nature of political alliances, emphasizing the absence of permanent friends or enemies in politics. He remains confident that a united coalition will ensure a stable parliamentary quorum. Thammanat also perceives a potential opportunity for Anutin Charnvirakul to become prime minister, contingent on securing a majority vote. He has tasked Pai Lik with negotiating with coalition parties regarding the deputy speaker position, asserting the party’s right to propose a candidate.

According to Thai News Agency, Thammanat addressed queries about the selection of the second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, acknowledging it as a topic that necessitates thorough discussion. He compared the current coalition’s slim majority to that of Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government, which managed to maintain control despite a narrow margin. Thammanat stressed the importance of coalition unity in achieving a quorum.

Thammanat, reflecting on his political journey since 1998, noted the variability of the political landscape and the importance of coalition discussions for stability. He asserted that the Kla Tham Party will democratically decide on proposing a candidate for deputy speaker, with input from party MPs. Thammanat confirmed that discussions with coalition partners are ongoing, led by the party secretary.

In response to inquiries about his relationship with Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Thammanat indicated that their interactions remain amicable, avoiding the creation of political adversaries. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of politics, referencing past reconciliations despite parliamentary disputes. Thammanat underscored that political opportunities, such as Anutin’s potential leadership, hinge on garnering majority support.

Thammanat emphasized the necessity of coalition discussions to navigate potential political challenges. As the caretaker of over 30 MPs, he highlighted the importance of maintaining full party support in all votes, citing recent voting consistency as an example.

Addressing concerns about political stagnation, Thammanat, drawing from his extensive experience, urged MPs to remain vigilant and prepared for every agenda vote. He dismissed the likelihood of a political shift, affirming the coalition’s current strength with approximately 260 votes and denying any deals with Bhumjaithai Party MPs to influence government support.
