Thawee Addresses Allegations of Double Standards in Icon-Tak Bai Case

BANGKOK: Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Thailand’s Minister of Justice, has refuted claims of double standards in the handling of the “Icon-Tak Bai” case, announcing measures to ensure justice is served. The justice minister emphasized his commitment to equitable treatment of all accused persons, while addressing overcrowding issues in the nation’s prisons.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Thawee explained that the justice process is constrained by the nation’s prison capacity, with facilities designed for 200,000 inmates currently holding nearly 300,000. He assured that accused individuals in the Icon case are being monitored according to regulations and have yet to be imprisoned. Special arrangements at the Central Women’s Correctional Institution and the Bangkok Special Prison are being made to ensure the accused can prepare their defense without unnecessary restrictions, such as mandatory haircuts, while maintaining access to legal counsel and family.

Pol. Col. Thawee responded to comparisons between
the pace of justice in citizen and state official cases, specifically addressing perceptions of sluggishness in the Tak Bai case. He noted that efforts have been consistent since 2014, refuting claims of undue delay.

Regarding allegations involving a politician referred to as “S.” in connection with a controversial video clip, Thawee stated that criminal matters, including money laundering, would be thoroughly pursued. He highlighted a focus on asset recovery to compensate victims and stressed the importance of prosecuting masterminds and beneficiaries involved in such cases. The Department of Special Investigation is tasked with uncovering the truth in these complex legal matters.
