Bangkok: “Thirat” has mandated a swift survey and relief effort for those impacted by Tropical Storm Wipha, with an emphasis on the rapid restoration of public utilities.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Thirat Rattanawanich, Deputy Minister of Interior, led a meeting at the Ministry of Interior’s War Room to address the ongoing flood and landslide issues caused by Tropical Storm Wipha. The meeting was attended by Mr. Saharat Wongskulwiwat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, along with officials and representatives from the affected provinces of Nan, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Lampang, Uttaradit, and Chiang Mai. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that as of July 21st, 12 provinces have been affected, involving 74 districts, 74,591 households, and over 233,000 people, with eight fatalities. While the situation is improving in some areas, others still require careful monitoring.
Ms. Thirat has instructed provinces where conditions have improved to promptly assess the damage and compile a detailed list of those affected to ensure that assistance is provided quickly and comprehensively. Additionally, she emphasized restoring essential utilities such as electricity, water, and roads to alleviate the suffering of the people.
The Deputy Minister of Interior highlighted the importance of communicating accurate information about relief measures and benefits to the citizens. This communication is intended to build public confidence, minimize confusion, and ensure equitable compensation for all affected households in line with established regulations and criteria.
Provinces and relevant agencies have been tasked with developing long-term recovery plans that involve local residents. This initiative aims to create sustainable prevention and resolution strategies, reduce the risk of future flooding, and promote stability and confidence among residents in the affected areas.
