Thousands of workers from various labor unions in Greater Jakarta staged a protest against the country’s first omnibus law on Job Creation in front of the Parliament (DPR) Building at Senayan, Central Jakarta, Friday.
President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal led the protest, with participants comprising members of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Union (KPBI), migrant workers, honorary teachers, women’s organizations, and domestic workers.
“The DPR and government have again approved the Omnibus Law. It means they agree to ‘outsource’ workers for life. It means they agree to cheap labor with low wages,” Iqbal stated from the command car.
The workers voiced four demands during the rally. Firstly, they rejected the Job Creation Act, while under their second demand, the workers sought ratification of the Bill on the Protection of Domestic Workers (RUU PPRT).
As per the third demand, the workers pressed for a revision to the Governor’s Decree on the District/City Minimum Wage (UMK) in 2022, as they were looking for an increase. Their last demand was revisions to the Corruption Eradication Commission Law (UU KPK).
“Similar rallies are also simultaneously conducted in dozens of other provinces, such as East Java, Central Java, North Sumatra, Riau Islands and South Sumatra,” Iqbal stated.
The rally in front of the DPR Building was held amid heavy rains.
