UI students create printing vending machine safe from data thieves

Depok, West Java (ANTARA) – Four University of Indonesia (UI) students have designed Printbox, a printing vending machine that is safe from data thieves, on-target, and helps eliminate the need of buying a printer whose utility is rather small.

Director of UI Innovation and Science Techno Park (DISTP UI) Ahmad Gamal lauded Alif Hikmah Fikri, Joshua Alviando, Ardanto Finkan Septa, and Yoga Dwi Adityaputra, who are the creators of Printbox, in a statement in Depok on Wednesday.

Printbox also eliminates the need for customer service when printing documents. In addition to saving on operating costs, tech-savvy millennial customers prefer a simple and independent transaction process, Gamal said.

“This is one of the reasons that DISTP UI incubated Inventing.id, a startup, as the owner of Printbox,” he added.

At the UI campus in Depok there are ten Printbox machines and one in the UI Medicine Faculty in Salemba, Central Jakarta. Since the launch of its product in March 2020, there are about 30 transactions per day at each Printbox machine.

In addition to Printbox, Inventing.id also created Employee Face Recognition and Water Level Monitoring as their flagship products.

Printbox provides solutions to problems of data security, such as data leakages that may happen when a data owner prints their ID cards, family cards, and savings account books at a photocopy counter.

Hikmah and his three colleagues were inspired by these problems, thus creating the Printbox machine.

Moreover, Printbox offers a friendly price for students at Rp500-Rp1,000 per sheet, he added.

According to Hikmah, the uploaded documents for printing will be locked on the server, so no one can access them. Once printed, the uploaded document will be automatically deleted, in an effort to protect user data from leaks and data theft.

This startup is mentored under DISTP UI and is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology under the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
