Bangkok: The Upper House concluded its first ordinary session of the year, with senators discussing a total of 123 matters over the course of 21 meetings. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Boonsong Noisophon, the Second Vice President of the Senate, presented a comprehensive summary of the legislative work carried out by the Senate from July 3 to October 30, 2024. The meetings spanned approximately 123 hours and 30 minutes, with 123 members requesting consultation prior to addressing the agenda.
In terms of legal proceedings, the Senate reviewed 11 draft laws, reaching agreements with the House of Representatives on five bills and with the joint committee on one bill, while another remains under joint committee review. Four additional bills are still under Senate consideration.
Regarding the Senate’s oversight of government administration, a total of 52 questions were raised. Of these, 21 were verbal inquiries, with the government responding to seven and omitting 14. Thirty-one questions were submitted in
writing, with the government addressing 25 during meetings, answering 15, omitting seven, and leaving three pending. Six questions were submitted for publication in the Royal Gazette, all of which are pending responses.
The Senate also reviewed 25 annual reports from various agencies or organizations, considered nine motions, and made decisions regarding the selection or approval of individuals for various positions in accordance with constitutional or other legal provisions. The Standing Committee is currently reviewing the conduct and ethical behavior of individuals nominated for one position.
The session concluded with senators being informed of the royal decree announcing the closure of the first regular session of parliament from October 31, 2024.
