Accra: The Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development Ghana (VAST Ghana), a public health advocacy organization, has declared that vaping poses significant health risks and should be rejected by health authorities.
According to Ghana News Agency, VAST Ghana criticized the tobacco industry's promotion of vaping as a form of tobacco harm reduction, labeling such endorsements as misleading. In a statement issued by Mr. Labram Musah, Executive Director of VAST-Ghana, the organization condemned attempts by the tobacco industry to normalize youth vaping in Ghana through online media platforms.
The statement emphasized that regardless of how attractively tobacco products are marketed, they remain harmful. It highlighted the health risks associated with tobacco and nicotine products, including respiratory issues, heart diseases, and cancers. The statement accused the industry of targeting young people by exploiting their vulnerabilities and using influencers to make addiction appear glamorous.
VAST Ghana called on various stakeholders, including the government, health authorities, civil society organizations, and community leaders, to enhance their efforts in protecting the youth. The organization urged collective action to expose the deceptive tactics of the tobacco industry and prevent the sacrifice of young people's health and aspirations.
The statement concluded with a call for unity in demanding protection from an industry that exploits the dreams of the youth, advocating for a future where young people can thrive without the influence of harmful tobacco products.
