Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia Archbishop Mgr. (Monsignor) Piero Pioppo visited East Nusa Tenggara Province on Tuesday to attend the 25th anniversary of Mgr. Petrus Turang’s ordainment as bishop on Wednesday, July 27.
East Nusa Tenggara Governor Viktor B. Laiskodat; Archbishop of Kupang Mgr. Petrus Turang, Speaker of the Provincial House of Representatives (DPRD) Emi Nomleni; Chief of Regional Police Inspector General Setyo Budyanto; and several officials welcomed Pioppo’s arrival at El Tari Airport in Kupang.
“Welcome to East Nusa Tenggara,” Governor Laiskodat stated after which he placed a woven fabric over Pioppo’s shoulders.
According to the East Nusa Tenggara Provincial Public Relations, the Vatican ambassador to Indonesia is on a visit to Kupang City to attend the 25th anniversary of Archbishop Mgr. Petrus Turang’s episcopal ordination on Wednesday, July 27.
July 27, 2022, will mark Archbishop Turang’s service to the Archdiocese of Kupang for 25 years, for which a thanksgiving mass will be held at the Santa Maria Assumpta Church, Kupang.
According to canon law, a bishop is expected to tender resignation from office when he reaches the age of 75 years or is unable to perform his duties properly due to health or other reasons.
Hence, Archbishop Turang wrote a letter of resignation addressed to Pope Francis at the Vatican.
If approved, then Mgr. Turang will retire and Pope Francis will appoint a new bishop for serving Catholics in the Archdiocese of Kupang.
Citing information from catholic-hierarchy.org, Petrus Turang was born in Tataaran, North Sulawesi, on February 23, 1947, and was ordained as bishop on July 27, 1997.
Meanwhile, based on the Religious Affairs Ministry’s data, East Nusa Tenggara is the province with the largest Catholic population in Indonesia, reaching 2,906,404 believers, as of July 2022.
