Vietnam Advocates for Increased Development Budget at UN Assembly

New York: Vietnam has called for an increased emphasis on resource allocation for development initiatives, highlighting concerns over the sluggish advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This appeal was made during a meeting of the Administrative and Budgetary Committee of the 79th UN General Assembly held in New York, where discussions centered around the United Nations budget for 2025.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, addressed the committee, emphasizing Vietnam’s support for initiatives aimed at securing funding for the Development Account and the Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation (RPTC). These programs are crucial in providing support to developing countries, which are often the most vulnerable in the global economic landscape.

Nguyen’s remarks come at a time when the international community is grappling with the challenges of meeting the targets set by the 2030 Agenda for Sus
tainable Development. The agenda, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) intended to address global issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice.

Vietnam’s call for increased budget allocation underscores the urgency of addressing these challenges, particularly in developing regions that face significant obstacles to sustainable development. The country’s advocacy for enhanced financial resources reflects its commitment to international cooperation and its belief in the importance of supporting nations that are striving to achieve their development goals.

The UN General Assembly’s discussions on the 2025 budget are expected to continue, with member states contributing to the dialogue on how best to allocate resources to support the global development agenda.
