Want to ensure Kanjuruhan victims get best treatment: President

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday met with the people injured in the Kanjuruhan Stadium stampede on Saturday (October 1, 2022) to ensure they received the best service in the hospital where they were undergoing treatment.

“I just visited the victims of the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy in Malang. I want to make sure that those (victims) treated at the hospital get the best service,” he said at the Dr. Saiful Anwar Regional General Hospital (RSUD), Malang city, East Java province.

At the hospital, he spoke to a number of victims regarding the night of the incident.

“I really want to know the initial cause of the tragedy,” he said.

He further informed that he has formed an independent joint fact-finding team (TGIPF) led by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, for the purpose.

He wished the victims a speedy recovery and told them to keep their spirits up.

“I also informed the victims that all costs for their treatment will be borne by the (central) government and local governments,” he added.

The central government will also hand over Rp50 million in compensation to the families of each of the victims who died in the incident, he said.

“I know that not only the central government, but the provincial government, the Malang city government, and (regional-owned) Bank Jatim (PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Timur Tbk) have also provided compensation, which is hoped to be able to ease the burden on the families and relatives of the victims,” he added.

As of Wednesday (October 5, 2022), a total of 131 people have died due to the stampede, including 33 children.

At least 30 people injured in the stampede are still being treated at Dr. Saiful Anwar RSUD for moderate to severe injuries. In fact, 7 victims have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with severe injuries.

The President has asked the TGIPF to complete its investigation into the unfortunate incident in one month.
