Bangkok: The government is actively seeking public input on the draft of the Solar Energy Promotion Act, encouraging citizens to voice their opinions before the consultation process concludes tomorrow. The initiative aims to ease the installation of solar rooftops and lower electricity costs for the public.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announced that the Ministry of Energy, under the leadership of Mr. Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, is spearheading the proposal of a ‘Draft Bill to Promote and Support the Use of Electricity from Solar Energy.’ The objective is to simplify the installation process for solar panels, reduce associated costs, and alleviate the financial burden of electricity bills sustainably.

The draft law is currently open for public comments via the central system, which will close on May 30, 2025. Citizens can express their views through the official government website, www.law.go.th, which serves as the primary platform for public feedback on draft legislation.

The existing process for installing rooftop solar systems in Thailand is complicated, involving multiple permissions from five separate government agencies, which deters many potential users. The proposed bill seeks to eliminate these barriers by transforming the process from requiring ‘permission’ to simply ‘notifying’ authorities, thereby expediting installations without retroactive permit reviews.

Key features of the bill include providing access to funding through tax incentives and low-interest loans, establishing a one-stop service center for public and private sector support, setting central standards for safe installations, and formulating legislation to protect citizens’ rights to use clean energy.

Upon conclusion of the consultation phase in May, the draft legislation will advance to the Cabinet in June and subsequently to Parliament in July 2025 for further consideration.

The government emphasizes that solar energy is accessible to all citizens and can significantly reduce electricity costs, enhance economic stability, and promote sustainable development. Ms. Sasikarn urged citizens to participate in shaping the energy future by submitting their feedback by May 30, 2025, as every contribution is vital to fostering a sustainable and equitable energy landscape.
