Bangkok: A 20-year-old female student was found dead in her dormitory after consuming kratom water, with police suspecting the beverage as the cause. The young woman, identified as Ms. Kanlaya from Phon Phisai District, Nong Khai Province, was discovered on her bed with foam at her mouth, indicating a possible reaction to the kratom drink.
According to Thai News Agency, officers from Udon Thani City Police Station responded to the incident early this morning. Preliminary autopsy results showed no signs of assault, and it was estimated that she had been deceased for one to two hours before being found. Her friend, Ms. First, revealed that they had been in a friend’s room the previous night when the kratom water was ordered and consumed. Ms. First did not partake in the drink and was shocked to find Ms. Kanlaya convulsing and unresponsive the following morning.
Ms. First further informed authorities that Ms. Kanlaya had no known underlying health conditions and had only recently resumed drinking kratom after a long pause. The deceased had been optimistic about her academic future, planning to undertake an internship and earn honors to make her parents proud. The police have initiated further investigations, including questioning the friend who was with them the previous night, to determine the exact cause of death.
In an immediate response, law enforcement, led by Pol. Col. Phattanawong Chanphon, raided a kratom shop on Udon Dutsadi Road, seizing 308 bottles of kratom juice and arresting an 18-year-old shopkeeper, Mr. Yot, from Fa Rai District. Another raid led to the arrest of Mr. Rak, a 19-year-old guard at a different branch, with an additional 114 bottles confiscated as evidence. Both individuals are currently undergoing questioning at Udon Thani City Police Station.
Ms. Kanlaya’s family has been notified, and they have arranged to transport her body back to her hometown in Phon Phisai District for traditional funeral rites. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover more details surrounding the tragic incident.
