East Nusa Tenggara Deputy Governor Josef Nae Soi has invited all residents in the province to register each potential intellectual property that they own to ensure legal protection. During the ‘Strategy to Explore Potential Intellectual Properties in East Nusa Tenggara’ event here on Thursday, he informed that only 15 of the 22 regions in the province have registered their communal intellectual property. He said that the data is based on research that he had conducted. Every intellectual property that exists in East Nusa Tenggara must be recorded and protected in order to avoid issues such as ownership claims by other parties. This is especially important since communal intellectual property encompasses geographic indication, traditional knowledge, genetic resources, and traditional cultural expressions such as dances, rituals, clothes, and music. East Nusa Tenggara has a large intellectual property potential, but not many people fully understand the importance of protecting that potential, Nae Soi noted. “Intellectual property, created both individually and communally, can be regarded as a precious treasure because currently, the world can no longer only rely on natural richness,” he noted. He urged various stakeholders in East Nusa Tenggara to participate in explaining or disseminating information on intellectual property to the people. District or municipal governments in East Nusa Tenggara must protect and register communal intellectual properties that exist in their respective regions so that they would have an impact on the people’s prosperity. The deputy governor called for collaborative work in order to increase intellectual property registration. On Tuesday, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin had called for real action for developing a solid intellectual property ecosystem to realize Indonesia’s vision of becoming a main actor in the global digital economy.
