Abbot Clarifies Misunderstanding Over Monk’s Relationship Incident

Bangkok: The abbot of Wat Mai (Ya Paen) has publicly addressed rumors concerning a monk known as ‘Phra Maha,’ who reportedly engaged in a relationship with a laywoman and subsequently disrobed. The abbot clarified that he is not the individual involved in the controversy surrounding a relationship with ‘Sika K,’ contrary to recent media reports.

According to Thai News Agency, Professor Dr. Phra Methee Wacharabandit (Hansa Thammahaso), the abbot of Wat Mai (Yai Paen), explained in an interview the confusion stemming from media reports. The misunderstanding arose because the monk in question also holds the academic title of ‘Professor Dr.,’ leading some to mistakenly believe the abbot was involved.

The incident concerned a junior monk from the temple who reported himself for committing a disciplinary offense. He disclosed that he attended a function at a layperson’s house, consumed a beverage, and subsequently lost consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, he realized the gravity of the situation and repor
ted having disrobed, citing a violation of the Dhamma and Vinaya, specifically a Parajika offense, which precludes reordination.

Details remain unclear regarding whether the monk maintained a relationship with ‘Ms. K.’ following the incident, as further inquiries were not made. While disrobing concludes the matter from a religious standpoint, any legal implications would fall under police jurisdiction.

Following the announcement, Phra Methee Wachirabhandit continued his religious duties, participating in the Buddhist Lent by receiving ceremonial candles.
