Bangkok: Abhisit reiterated that Thailand should not be complacent about Cambodia, even after signing a peace treaty. He emphasized that diplomacy must be pursued in conjunction with security forces. He had already told the Prime Minister to be wary of Cambodia, saying it could be used to discuss the issue at any forum. He did not guarantee that Trump, as a witness, would abide by the agreement.
According to Thai News Agency, Democrat Party Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva commented on the signing of the Thailand-Cambodia peace accord, saying that everyone agreed on the goal of the peace accord. The agreement, signed in broad terms, still requires further details, such as the work of observers. Thailand should remain committed to addressing the four demands, which must be met before other processes can proceed. If the government reaffirms this commitment, ensuring that agencies are implementing them robustly and fostering greater understanding among international organizations about the importance of the four demands, this will be even more beneficial.
Regarding the signing of this peace agreement, who has the greater advantage or disadvantage? Mr. Abhisit stated that he does not consider advantages or disadvantages until we know for sure, such as the nature and manner in which observers or other countries will observe, as well as the diplomatic and military operations on both sides. The signing of the agreement did not go into detail to indicate this or that. This remains a heavy burden for the security sector, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the government as a whole, which must proceed with due diligence.
Abhisit also revealed that he had had the opportunity to speak with Prime Minister Anutin Charn Virakul, who advised him to be cautious about Cambodia, as the issue could be discussed at any forum without an agenda and without the purpose of the meeting. Therefore, we must be prepared at all times to advance diplomacy while supporting security operations. He emphasized that diplomatic operations are crucial to supporting security forces, as they ensure their confidence in their operations.
Regarding the US President’s presence as a witness for the signing, he believes Cambodia is unlikely to renege. Abhisit stated that such reassurance cannot be taken lightly. He added that the reality must be monitored and the world must see that these four points are being put into practice.
