Manila: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Winfried Wicklein as Director General for its Sectors Department 2. In his new role, Wicklein will spearhead operations across critical sectors including agriculture, food, nature, rural development, water, urban development, and digital sectors. His leadership aims to bolster ADB's position as a pioneer in development expertise, enhancing the institution's thought leadership, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
According to Asian Development Bank, Wicklein expressed enthusiasm for his new appointment, stating, "ADBs work across these sectors is transformational and I am excited to take on this new role. Working together with our partners, we will continue mobilizing the expertise and financial resources needed to help our developing member countries leverage innovative new approaches and achieve inclusive, resilient, and sustainable outcomes."
With over 30 years of experience in development, Wicklein is a seasoned professional who has dedicated 26 years to ADB. In 2023, he was appointed Director General of ADB's Southeast Asia Department, following a two-year tenure as Deputy Director General. During his time in these roles, he led strategic planning and the execution of ADB's objectives in Southeast Asia, managing the department's operations and personnel. His previous roles include serving as country director for Myanmar and Indonesia.
An Austrian national, Wicklein holds a master's degree in international management from the University of Münster, Germany.
