Anutin Apologizes for Miscommunication on Thai-Cambodian Territorial Dispute

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul returned to Thailand after attending the ASEAN Summit, where he addressed criticism regarding statements about Thailand’s encroachment on Cambodian territory. Anutin clarified that his comments referred to the “claimed territory” which is a subject of mutual claim by both nations, rather than an actual encroachment as perceived by some. He apologized for any misunderstanding and emphasized the importance of both countries adhering to existing agreements.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin discussed his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, during which both leaders signed an agreement. Cambodia has committed to implementing “four conditions,” which Thailand is ready to honor once Cambodia completes the necessary procedures. Part of this agreement involves the return of 18 Cambodian soldiers, who are undergoing medical checks to ensure compliance with humanitarian standards.

In terms of border issues, Anutin confirmed that the topic of opening border checkpoints was not discussed. He also mentioned that an ASEAN Observer Team, consisting of military attach©s from member states, is monitoring the situation concerning the withdrawal of heavy weapons.

The Prime Minister commented on the progress of meeting the four conditions, predicting it would take an additional 1-2 months, especially concerning bomb disposal efforts. He noted it is unlikely to be finished within the remaining months of the current government. On the topic of dealing with scammer gangs, Anutin highlighted the need for renewed engagement with Cambodian officials following a period of disruption.
