Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has reaffirmed his dedication to addressing the ongoing Thai-Cambodian dispute, maintaining that he is not neglecting the issue. He highlighted the economic and logistical impact of border closures on Cambodia and expressed optimism for a resolution. Anutin also emphasized his willingness to engage diplomatically, particularly following an offer from former U.S. President Donald Trump to mediate, underscoring his commitment to protecting Thai sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin’s recent phone conversation with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung coincided with his visit to Laos. The call, initiated by South Korea to congratulate Anutin on his appointment and discuss the upcoming APEC summit, also touched upon the regional issue of scammers. Anutin expressed readiness to collaborate with South Korea in combating scams affecting citizens in Thailand and South Korea, pledging full cooperation.
The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand’s active engagement in addressing the scammer issue, emphasizing the use of negotiation and verbal communication to maintain peace. He assured that Thai territory and sovereignty remain uncompromised, with no current threats of cross-border aggression. Anutin stressed that the absence of conflict is due to Thailand’s demonstrated readiness to respond decisively to any threats, while remaining open to peaceful negotiations.
Anutin outlined conditions for ongoing diplomatic talks with Cambodia, demanding assurances of peace, including troop withdrawals and border clarity. He stated that the Thai government, despite its brief tenure, has maintained strong border closure measures, significantly impacting Cambodia. Anutin affirmed the military’s authority in ensuring national security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ role in pursuing diplomatic solutions without compromising Thailand’s interests.
