Anutin Charnvirakul to Appoint Outsider as Justice Minister Amid Extensive Background Checks

Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul announced that an outsider will soon be appointed as the Minister of Justice. He noted that background checks on potential cabinet members are taking time as multiple agencies are involved in the process.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated in an interview that the Cabinet Secretary has received the names of potential ministers and forwarded them to relevant agencies for verification. Several agencies have already responded, and more responses are expected. Anutin confirmed that no nominees have been rejected thus far.

Anutin explained that delays in the verification process are due to consultations required with agencies across all 77 provinces. He acknowledged that while he initially did not understand the need for such extensive checks, the Office of the Cabinet Secretariat assured him it was in line with regulations. Anutin emphasized the importance of completing the process in a thorough manner to prevent future issues, stating that once all information is submitted, a meeting will be convened to reach a consensus and expedite the submission to His Majesty the King.

When questioned about potential problematic individuals, such as Mr. Woraphat Thanyawong, who is currently under investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Anutin refrained from naming individuals. He assured that all nominees are undergoing comprehensive background checks by independent organizations, and no issues have been identified at this time. If any names are returned, the Cabinet Secretary will summarize the findings for Anutin’s review before any further actions are taken.

Anutin could not provide a specific timeline for when the list of names would be finalized and submitted for royal endorsement, noting that the list must be sent to various organizations for expedited review. He acknowledged public anticipation for the cabinet reshuffle and assured that efforts are being made to expedite the process while ensuring thoroughness.

Anutin highlighted the importance of cooperation from non-government agencies in conducting the background checks. Although the process is lengthy, he emphasized the necessity of a thorough review to avoid potential issues and ensure integrity in the national administration.
