Bangkok: ‘Kamphu’ has elucidated the rich history and significance of ‘Asalha Bucha Day,’ observed on the 15th day of the waning moon of the 8th lunar month. This day marks a monumental event in Buddhist history when the Lord Buddha announced Buddhism for the first time, two months after his enlightenment.
According to Thai News Agency, on this sacred day, Buddha delivered his inaugural sermon, the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta,’ to the five Pancavaggiya monks. The sermon led to Venerable Anya Konda±±a, one of the five monks, achieving enlightenment. Following this enlightenment, Anya Konda±±a expressed his wish to be ordained, becoming the first monk in Buddhism.
Asarnha Bucha Day is revered as the day when the Triple Gem-the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha-was completed, signifying the establishment of the Buddhist community. This day holds profound importance as it symbolizes the formal inception of Buddhism and the beginning of its teachings being shared with the world.
