The management of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali has continued to cooperate with other airport stakeholders to ensure the smooth provision of services amid the recent spate of extreme weather.
I Gusti Ngurah Rai’s Denpasar Meteorological Station Class 1 has forecast extreme weather in the Bali-Nusa Tenggara area from December 23, 2022, till the end of the year due to tropical cyclone Ellie.
“Extreme weather conditions have the potential to cause flight delays in both arrival and departure,” the general manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Handy Heryudhitiawan, said in Bali on Friday.
To anticipate this, his party has undertaken several measures, including coordinating with stakeholders such as airlines to carry out landing at other airports or diverting flights to prevent long delays in airspace.
“If the weather gets better, the flight navigation party, namely AirNav, will give directions to prioritize flights that will land at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport,” he added.
The management of Bali airport has also continued to improve coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to anticipate bad weather, which can have a direct impact on flight safety, Heryudhitiawan informed.
“Service to passengers is our top priority. Therefore, our coordination with the BMKG needs to be improved to anticipate things that may occur, such as rain, strong winds, and low visibility, which may have an impact on flight operations,” he said.
On December 25, the Air Transportation Post at Bali airport recorded a total of 385 flights with 55,161 domestic and international passengers.
In addition, in the period from December 19–28, the airport served 566,567 passengers, with an average of 56,657 passengers per day.
According to the information provided, 300,349 of the total passengers were flying domestic routes and 266,218 were flying international routes.
“In the same period, there were 3,776 aircraft movements, namely 2,265 domestic flights and 1,511 international flights. There were also 327 additional flights from Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur,” he informed.
