Bhumjaithai Party Denounces Misleading Cannabis Headlines

Bangkok: A Bhumjaithai Party spokesperson criticized Ms. Theerarat Rattanawanich for sharing a foreign media headline labeling Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul as “the King of Thai Cannabis,” which had adverse implications on his reputation. The spokesperson emphasized that the party’s stance is strictly for medical cannabis use.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Nan Bunthida Somchai, Ubon Ratchathani MP and the party’s spokesperson, responded to Ms. Thirat Rattanawanich’s Facebook post regarding Mr. Anutin’s role as Prime Minister. She highlighted concerns raised by a Financial Times article titled “The King of Thai Cannabis” being elected as Prime Minister, fearing it might impact economic and tourism sectors by affecting international confidence. Ms. Nan expressed disappointment that the headline was shared without reading the full article, which did not contain negative implications against Mr. Anutin.

Ms. Nan urged for thorough reading of news stories, cautioning against reliance on potentially misleading headlines. She reiterated that the Bhumjaithai Party’s policy focuses on promoting cannabis for medical purposes only. She criticized associating the party with derogatory headlines as unwarranted.

Addressing attempts to reclaim credibility, Ms. Nan stated that the party is prepared to defend against accusations and clarify attempts to gain undue recognition. She affirmed confidence in the party’s ability to counter allegations against Mr. Anutin and its members.

When questioned about legal actions, Ms. Nan clarified that she does not intend to pursue lawsuits. She acknowledged the possibility of misunderstandings arising from incomplete readings of articles. Although serious cases, like the one involving Mr. Supachai Jaisamut, may necessitate explanations, the party remains guided by its principles and refrains from legal proceedings unless absolutely necessary.
