Bhumtham Leads Delegation to Malaysia for Critical Ceasefire Talks with Cambodia

Kuala lumpur: Bhumtham Wechayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting as Thailand’s Prime Minister, has led a delegation to Malaysia to engage in crucial discussions with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet regarding the first step in ceasefire negotiations. The meeting emphasizes the necessity for sincerity from Cambodia in these talks, focusing on sovereignty and public welfare. The delegation, including high-ranking officials, departed from Don Mueang, Bangkok, and is set to participate in a regional peace discussion at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham expressed that discussions will escalate to the prime ministerial level. Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair, will host these talks with the United States and China acting as observers. The agenda’s primary focus is a ceasefire, aimed at safeguarding civilian lives. Bilateral discussions will address various issues to end hostilities that threaten Thai citizens. Phumtham insists that no discussions will involve the controversial 1:200,000 scale map, maintaining that all efforts are directed toward national benefit. He reiterated trust issues with Cambodia due to past non-compliance but emphasized sovereignty and public interest as guiding principles. Any significant national issues will be taken to the House of Representatives for further discussion.

Mr. Phumtham criticized Cambodia’s lack of sincerity in previous negotiations, asserting the need for visible and sincere efforts from Cambodia. The Thai delegation aims to uphold the country’s sovereignty and prioritize public welfare. Proposals have been shared with Malaysia, China, and the United States, but concerns remain over Cambodia’s aggressive actions, despite calls for a ceasefire. Mr. Phumtham emphasized Thailand’s transparency and adherence to international law, noting global understanding and support for Thailand’s position.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the global desire for peace, emphasizing that all involved parties, including China, the United States, and Malaysia, seek to prevent further violence. Thailand seeks to demonstrate Cambodian actions’ unjust nature through negotiations focused on civilian safety and territorial integrity. The Thai delegation aims to protect national interests, consulting with military leaders to ensure informed negotiation strategies.

Regarding potential impacts on Thailand’s credibility from Cambodian citizen protests abroad, Mr. Phumtham remains optimistic, awaiting negotiation outcomes. He acknowledged that current statements are speculative, emphasizing the need for further dialogue to yield beneficial results for regional peace and stability.
