Bhumtham to Sue Academics Over Comments on Leg Amputation Incident

Bangkok: “Bhumtham,” identified as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Phumtham Wechayachai, has announced plans to take legal action against academics who allegedly made inflammatory remarks about a Thai soldier’s leg amputation. Phumtham emphasized the importance of words not causing division and expressed his determination to address such comments through legal means.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to file a lawsuit against the United Nations, accusing Cambodia of violating the Ottawa Convention. He criticized the act as a deliberate hindrance to peace. The Deputy Prime Minister revealed that the military and other sectors have been directed to engage with the public amid concerns of another immigration wave. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting measures that protect national sovereignty.

Phumtham addressed the incident of a Thai soldier who lost his leg after stepping on a landmine on August 12th, expressing his condolences and sympathy. He noted that the military’s need for self-protection is legitimate under international law and treaties. He stated that the incident represents a serious violation of conventions, particularly the Ottawa Convention, and requires legal action through the United Nations.

Phumtham highlighted the need for public reassurance amid fears and stressed the role of government and military agencies in maintaining calm. He criticized certain media outlets for allegedly fabricating news to incite panic and urged cooperation in understanding the situation.

In response to former Prime Minister Settha Thavisin’s suggestion to involve the International Criminal Court, Phumtham detailed ongoing discussions with the UN Secretary-General and other international bodies. He emphasized the importance of public understanding and international awareness of the issue, citing confidence in the international community’s comprehension of Thailand’s stance.

Addressing concerns about military preparedness, Phumtham assured that the government is ready to provide necessary support from the central budget, dismissing the need for public appeals. He stressed that national sovereignty remains a priority, with the government committed to fortifying military capabilities.

Phumtham also addressed allegations of bias towards Cambodia, clarifying his stance on military actions and their unintended consequences. He condemned the distortion of facts and pledged to take legal action against those responsible for spreading misinformation.

In conclusion, Phumtham called for public cooperation in resolving the issue and expressed frustration over the lack of justice in his previous experiences. He vowed to pursue legal action against those who distort facts or make divisive statements, citing past legal victories as precedent.
