Bangkok: Bhumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, announced his commitment to continue working until the new government is officially established. He emphasized his readiness to hand over responsibilities once the People’s Party can potentially influence the Bhumjaithai Party’s stance on constitutional amendments.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham, who is also a leading figure in the Pheu Thai Party, addressed the People’s Party’s decision to support Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, as Prime Minister. He acknowledged the House of Representatives’ decision, particularly the People’s Party’s support for Mr. Anutin, as a process that respects the party’s and people’s choices. However, he noted that the People’s Party would be accountable for subsequent developments.
Mr. Phumtham elaborated on his role, stating that his tenure as acting Prime Minister was focused on resolving ongoing crises. He assured that the current government would maintain its efforts until the new government is sworn in and its policies are presented to Parliament. This continuity is aimed at addressing national challenges until the transition of power occurs.
Discussing constitutional amendments, Mr. Phumtham reiterated the Pheu Thai Party’s dedication to this cause, highlighting past rejections by the Bhumjaithai Party and the Senate. He expressed hope that the People’s Party could influence a coordinated effort to amend the constitution, aligning with agreed objectives.
