BPS highlights farm workers’ 0.14-percent daily wage hike in May

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the average daily wage for farm workers in May 2021 rose by 0.14 percent as compared to the previous month, reaching Rp56,710, from Rp56,629 per day.

“However, due to an increase in the household consumption index by 0.22 percent in rural areas, in real terms, the wages of farm workers have decreased by 0.07 percent as compared to April 2021, reaching Rp52,431, from Rp52,469 per day,” Head of BPS Suhariyanto stated during a virtual press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The same trend was also witnessed in the wages of construction workers, which climbed slightly by 0.04 percent as compared to April 2021 to reach Rp91,025, from Rp90,989 per day. However, since the May 2021 inflation was recorded at 0.32 percent, in real terms, the wages of construction workers decreased by 0.28 percent to reach Rp85,365, from Rp85,605 per day. Meanwhile, the average nominal wage for female hairdressers in May 2021 increased by 0.34 percent as compared to April 2021 to reach Rp29,126, from Rp29,027 per day. Meanwhile, the real wage increased by 0.02 percent, to reach Rp27,315, from Rp27,310 per day.

Meanwhile, the average nominal wage for household assistants increased by 0.15 percent in May 2021 as compared to April 2021 to reach Rp424,164, from Rp423,529. Meanwhile, the real wage decreased by 0.17 percent, to reach Rp397,792, from Rp398,469 per month.

The nominal wage of a worker is the average daily pay received as a reward for the completed work.

Meanwhile, the real wage of workers describes the purchasing power of the income or wages received by the workers.

The real wage of farm laborers is the ratio between the nominal wages of farm workers and the consumption index of rural households, while the real wages of construction workers is the ratio of the nominal wages of construction workers to the urban consumer price index.
