BRGM applies 3R to support Indonesia’s GHG emission-reduction goal

The National Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) has applied the 3R strategy — rewetting, revegetation, and revitalization — to support Indonesia’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Rewetting involved making a well by creating a canal block, revegetation entailed planting mangrove forests, while revitalization was related to economic revival, BRGM’s official, Didy Wurjanto, noted in a written statement here on Tuesday.

For the 3R strategy, the BRGM will involve local residents, so that they can directly avail its benefits, including for economic prosperity, he remarked.

“The BRGM is not only working to control the climate, but this peatland restoration and mangrove rehabilitation also aims to boost the citizens’ prosperity. This is very important,” he expounded.
The BRGM has currently built 17 thousand Peatland Rewetting Infrastructure (IPG) and five thousand canal blocks as well as rehabilitated hundreds of hectares of the mangrove ecosystem, he highlighted.

“Economic revitalization packages are also provided, which we develop along with the people,” he elaborated.

Through this effort, the BRGM is optimistic that Indonesia would achieve its climate change control goal of reducing GHG emissions by 29 percent through its own effort or 41 percent through international support by 2030.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s Official Nuraeni spoke of mitigation and adaptation being applied by the government to handle climate change.

Mitigation is conducted to reduce emissions, such as through the peatland and mangrove ecosystem, which could reduce GHG emissions, she explained.

Adaptation is an effort to adapt toward climate change to lower its potential for destruction, utilize emerging opportunities, and handle consequences that arise, she noted.

“Climate change has an obvious impact on life. The government, in this case the ministry, is trying to identify the modality or support system to ensure that our commitment can be fulfilled,” she noted.

“We have striven to provide a roadmap for climate change adaptation as complementary of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document,” she noted.
