Phnom penh: The Ministry of Culture has clarified that rumors circulating about Cambodia’s intention to include ‘Thai dress’ in its UNESCO proposal for wedding traditions are unfounded.
According to Thai News Agency, the ministry stated that the proposal to register ‘Thai dress’ as UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage is a separate initiative that will be considered by UNESCO in 2026. This proposal aligns with the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and follows a Cabinet resolution from 2024.
Concerns had arisen on social media regarding Cambodia’s alleged plans to register ‘Khmer wedding traditions’ with UNESCO, with some speculating that it involved ‘Thai dress’. However, the ministry clarified that the proposal focuses solely on Cambodia’s intellectual heritage and cultural traditions, without reference to Thai dress.
The UNESCO review process for such proposals involves a detailed examination by a UNESCO Board of Experts, ensuring principles of transparency, mutual respect, and international cooperation.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s registration of ‘Thai dress’ aims to gain international recognition for the attire, promoting Thai cultural heritage under principles of understanding and creativity. The initiative seeks to enhance the global appreciation of Thai culture and its graceful coexistence with other cultures.
