Bangkok: “Paethongtarn” reveals that the Ministry of Culture is about to explain the issue of Cambodia proposing Thai dresses for weddings to be listed as world heritage. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, addressed media inquiries during a recent cabinet meeting about Cambodia’s proposal to have Thai wedding attire recognized as a world heritage. This has raised concerns and sparked discussions about cultural heritage and recognition.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn also responded to questions regarding Cambodia’s request for the return of 20 Thai antiques, expressing her willingness to personally cover the associated expenses. However, her focus swiftly returned to the issue of Thai costumes when asked about potential diplomatic actions.
Further questioning revealed that the Thai government is considering sending a letter of protest concerning Cambodia’s inclusion of Thai attire in their World Heritage List for ancient Cambodian weddings. Ms. Paethongtarn assured that the Ministry of Culture is in the process of preparing a detailed statement to clarify Thailand’s position on this matter.
Apart from addressing these cultural heritage issues, Ms. Paethongtarn took the opportunity to visit the ‘Taste of Southern, Local Identity of the Southern Border Provinces’ exhibition, which showcased products from the five southern border provinces. During her visit, she purchased two pieces of satin fabric featuring the royal pattern of Siriraj Phastraphon, highlighting her support for local artisans and cultural preservation efforts.
