Ciliwung River conservation expected to be national standard: Minister

Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said on Sunday that the implementation of conservation of the Ciliwung River in Jakarta hopefully becomes a national standard for the preservation of other rivers throughout Indonesia.

Speaking at the Ciliwung Rowing Festival here, he said the preservation of the Ciliwung River could be emulated by people living along other big rivers, such as Citarum River in West Java and Brantas River in East Java.

Hadimuljono highlighted the importance of maintaining the Ciliwung River to enable the present generation to inherit it to future generations. To this end, all  elements of society at large are expected to participate in keeping the river clean.

The PUPR Ministry has continued to encourage the public to take care of Ciliwung River, such as through the Clean and Healthy Ciliwung Joint Movement the Ciliwung Cisadane River Basin Center (BBWS) of the ministry’s Directorate General of Water Resources carries out.

Hadimuljono has said that the implementation of the Clean Ciliwung Movement is expected to increase public awareness of the importance of preserving and maintaining the cleanliness of the river.

He hoped that the movement would also be able to encourage more public initiatives in supporting the sustainable management of water resources.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Provincial Government had disclosed earlier that it had proposed for Rp700 billion allocation fund in 2023 Jakarta regional budget (APBD) for land acquisition in Ciliwung River normalization program.

The Jakarta Water Resources Office has noted that the total land acquisition required for the program is around 6.45 hectares while the estimated total length of the river which will be normalized is 4.3 kilometers.

Some Rp178 billion of the allocation fund will be utilized to establish flats for the residents affected by the land acquisition.
