Commerce Ministry Sets Ambitious Goals at World Tapioca Conference 2025

Bangkok: The Department of Foreign Trade organized the 7th World Tapioca Conference 2025 (WTC 2025), bringing together 16 trade partners and setting a target of 300 million baht in purchase orders.

According to Thai News Agency, Mrs. Arada Fuangthong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, stated that Thailand, as a leading producer and exporter of cassava, is preparing to host WTC 2025 during July 29-30, 2025. The event will be themed ‘Thailand Tapioca Next: GO Global Go Together’ and aims to enhance the Thai cassava industry for sustainable global competition. The conference is expected to attract importers from over 16 countries and 1 economic zone, with a purchase order target of no less than 300 million baht.

This initiative aligns with the government’s policy of “Market-led, Innovation-enhanced, Increased Income” and the Ministry of Commerce’s strategy “Increased Trade Opportunities, Opened the World Market, Created Opportunities for Thailand”. As one of the world’s largest cassava exporters, the department seeks to maintain Thailand’s leadership and expand into new markets to create stability and income for farmers.

Ms. Arada emphasized the significance of WTC 2025 as a platform to sustain leadership in cassava production and open new opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs and farmers. The two-day event will commence on July 29 at Millennium Hilton Bangkok with a focus on sustainability in the cassava industry. July 30 will feature activities such as a special lecture, signing ceremony for cassava purchase agreements, business matching, focus group meetings, and an exhibition showcasing the cassava industry’s potential.

The conference will highlight the Thailand Tapioca Next concept to demonstrate Thailand’s readiness to advance cassava in quality, standards, and innovation. Ms. Arada noted the emphasis on innovative processed products that add value to the agricultural sector.

Additionally, a sub-group meeting will delve into using cassava in new industries like animal feed, bioplastics, biomass energy, and processing technology, creating future commercial advantages.

In 2024, Thailand exported 6.47 million tons of cassava, generating over 110,255 million baht. In the first five months of 2025, Thailand exported 4.06 million tons, a 37.16% increase from the previous year. However, export value decreased by 12.52% to around 45,358 million baht due to falling world market prices.

The Department of Foreign Trade aims to export no less than 7.5 million tons of cassava in 2025, while expanding into new markets and downstream industries to ensure price stability and sustainable income for farmers.
