Communication studies should be the main subject in every major to prevent conversational confusion, according to communications expert Prof. Alwi Dahlan here on Wednesday.
“Communicational confusions trigger clashes in each study subject. Communication should be the center of all science. The Indonesian Communication Scholars Association (ISKI) must fight for it,” Dahlan noted in his statement.
The professor affirmed that rapid technological developments were widely used by the community as a medium to communicate. However, those changes also have some negative impacts wherein people fight, contradict each other, and gossip on new media platforms.
“This misuse of communication is concerning. Communication must return as a base for understanding, discussing, and selecting problems, so that there is a good solution,” he explained.
Dahlan noted that there were 360 communication program studies and five thousand communication major graduates annually in Indonesia. He believes that figure holds huge potential for ISKI to play its role as a catalyst and mediator that moves dynamically and adaptively to proffer benefits to several communities.
ISKI Manager Ade Kadarisman also highlighted the importance of transformation for ISKI’s future.
“The efforts to develop (communication science) in ISKI should be accompanied by appropriate organizational management by taking into account the needs of its members and future challenges,” Kadarisman remarked.
He affirmed that organizational transformation was a key factor to open several rooms for self-development and collaboration with stakeholders.
Another ISKI management member, Dr. Leila Mona Ganiem, stated that digital disruption and the pandemic reminded ISKI that it is a platform for positive measures that share advantages.
“(I hope that) ISKI can present better organizational governance and planning,” she remarked.
Furthermore, Ganiem expressed optimism that the ISKI would be able to bear a leadership figure that supports the development of communication studies.
