Hanoi: Vietnam is intensifying its efforts to address illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as the nation prepares for an inspection by the European Commission (EC). The government aims to have the ‘yellow card’ designation on its fisheries sector lifted, a move that could significantly enhance seafood exports to the European Union market.
According to Vietnam News Agency, coastal localities throughout Vietnam have been actively engaged in various measures to prevent and control IUU fishing. These initiatives come as part of a broader strategy to comply with international standards and improve the sustainability of the country’s fisheries sector. The removal of the ‘yellow card’ is anticipated to open up new opportunities for Vietnam’s seafood industry in the European market, which has strict regulations regarding sustainable fishing practices.
