Continuing to finalize pension program for workers: minister

Based on the Social Security Administrator for Employment (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of participants in the pension insurance program stood at 13.65 million as of February 2022, the minister said. The figure is far lower than the total working population, which was pegged at 135.61 million.

“This figure shows that only about 10 percent more workers have a pension plan. This issue requires a solution from us together in order to provide protection and guarantees for welfare for the community while still paying attention to the state’s fiscal capacity,” she added.

She invited all parties to collaborate and actively contribute ideas to produce innovative policies and new schemes that can encourage the advancement of the pension insurance system in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, director general of industrial relations and social security at the Manpower Ministry, Indah Anggoro Putri, said the ministry needs to prepare several things to answer the challenges in the pension insurance system to ensure the welfare of workers after retirement.

“It is also necessary to use Indonesia’s demographic bonus to create a pension insurance program scheme that covers the entire population with optimal benefits,” she added.
