COVID-19 cases increase by 850; Jakarta records most infections

Indonesia added 850 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, with Jakarta accounting for 554 infections, the COVID-19 Handling Task Force reported.

Meanwhile, 353 patients recovered and eight people died of COVID-19, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Health.

The cumulative case tally since the country reported its first infection in 2020 reached 4,269,740 on Friday. Of the total patients, 4,117,700 recovered and 144,163 succumbed to the disease.

Currently, there are 7,877 active cases or individuals undergoing isolation and treatment, an increase of 489 compared to January 13, 2022.

Meanwhile, 280,563 specimens from 198,375 people had been tested in laboratories across Indonesia as of Friday.

Provinces that reported the largest increase in cases included Jakarta (554), West Java (104), Banten (88), East Java (21), and Central Java (10).

West Java and Banten reported two deaths each and Jakarta, East Java, Central Java, and East Nusa Tenggara reported one death each.

Indonesia added 66 Omicron cases on Friday, taking the total number to 572.

Spokesperson for COVID-19 vaccinations at the Health Ministry, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said there was no difference in the symptoms presented by patients traveling abroad and patients with local transmission.

Most of the patients were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, with the most common symptoms being cough, runny nose, and fever, she said.
